Language and adolescents

There exist a close relationship between language and ageing.  One of the stages in ageing is the adolescent stage.  Adolescence is a stage whereby individuals mark themselves as members of a social group by using different linguistic features.  This can be explained from the fact that any person changing social affiliation his linguistic aspect is likely to change due to the influence of a new group’s language behaviours. For the adolescent to identify themselves as members of a new group their language has to change and mark their identity to that new group.  Questions that need ponder are
  • ·         What new linguistic behaviours are likely to be adopted by adolescents as an identity to a new group?
  • ·         Does that change continue over the course of life span beyond adolescence?
